A search of a Home in Tunisia, 3 ridiculous rules you have to abide as an Arab foreigner when sexism is the base constitution of your house contract
- No males
allowed:
If you want
to live in a beautiful apartment In Tunisia, then it’s a no man’s land!
Almost all landlords state this as the main
rule for female residents as first as you show up to check the apartment, whether
you are renting the place for a short or long period, your residence there is
depending solely on this rule. No more
cozy dinners with your boyfriend, no more hosting poker nights for the group
and you can certainly throw away your guest utensils if all your friends were
actually males as in my case, you’ll save more space in the kitchen.
- You shall
never be home late:
A proper
Cinderella should never pass midnight as the time to return home or else you’ll
catch the stinky reputation and you shall never ever get your prince charming!
As ridiculous as it seems but it’s a regular
thing for landlords to ask their female residents to maintain a certain
timetable for leaving the house and returning and commit to it, slightly
changes in the timetable might pass unnoticed but an a arbitrary change like a
sleepover at a friend’s house and returning in the morning or a late night at
the bar and shackling the keys as quite as possible after 2am can lead to a
wholesome interrogation next day, an interrogation that can determine your
efficiency of being a proper resident. Of course this doesn’t apply for male residents
in Tunisia as it seems that landlords tend to give those princes more freedom
to venture the night searching for the second pair of shoes Cinderella left out
when she hurried home early to avoid the next morning interrogation.
- They need to
be extra sure you can pay rent each month:

Prepare your
CV well, because you will be having the interview of your lifetime!
The
landlords tend to have the idea that woman aren’t actually capable of paying
their own rent, and that they only work to support their alpha males whether
it’s their husband, father or older brother, but they can’t grasp the thought
of a woman who could actually be fully independent and not be late to her
bills. Because of this prejudgment they usually start raining you with questions
about your job and post, they even ask about your salary sometimes in which
they have no right to do. Usually they prefer to rent for a student as she
stills gets her monthly allowance from a “trusted male source” in that case he
won’t be worried about any delay. They usually refuse to host refugees as they
consider them to be financially unreliable which is so unfair and totally
unacceptable, so refugees tend to fabricate stories about a distant rich father
that tickles your bank account every month or about a dream job where you can become a
millionaire by 30.
